UAV /Drone Idea

While researching some info on private drones, I came across an article that describes using a flare gun to launch a camera into the air. The idea is to launch a small wireless camera and review the imagery for important info. Applications? Search and rescue. small area recon. Bug out recon. But this method fails to take cost into account.

I would consider launching a gliding drone instead. With rudder and elevator, a glider can return to the operator for

Private Drone Shot Down

An octo-copter is like many other privately built personal-use R/C aircraft. As the name implies, it is a copter flown with 9 motors. We have posted articles here on tri-copters and quad-copters. The more rotors you have, the greater life you have. Depending on configuration, the greater number of rotors means greater survivability if one or more fail or are disabled.

Here is a story about an octo in Berks County, PA, that was partially disabled by gun shot. It

Automated UAV - discovered post from 2009

I was looking for some UAV material when I came across a post from 2009. It talks briefly about a home-built UAV setup with a 100KM range. Yes, you read that right – 100 kilometers. It operates on HAM band, thus the power and range capabilities. It is also guided by GPS for unattended flight mode. While the post is on “Hack a Day”, the real information is at the other end of the links provided. Certainly makes for some

A Few Odds and Ends

Back from a practice run with the mobile retreat, our BORV. All went well, considering my huge lack of sleep and an unusually high intolerance for warmer temperatures. Once again, for those interested, I must stress that a properly suited BORV needs to have storage, storage and STORAGE. If you plan on being self-sufficient while mobile, you have to accept that all needed supplies must be part of your load. Maximizing the possibilities is impossible without storage. It’s even more

UAVs for Private Use (Tri and Quad Copters)

UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) offer quite a bit to the prepper. Small, inexpensive radio-controlled aircraft have now come down in price such that a prepper might build one, or have one built, for less than $1,000. That might seem like a lot, and they surely can go up in price from there, but they provide options to the prepper’s lifestyle and security that should be considered by certain individuals and groups in our community.

I’ll present you with a few
