3 Day Hike with a Young Apprentice

I saw a notice on one page about an individual looking to take a young son out on a hike. It is a three-day hike meant to teach a few things and share skills. What this father was looking to do was gather information useful to his trip so he could ensure its success.

Deciding what activities to include can be difficult. There are so many options to consider, and they can’t all be included. Being as this is a

Recoil

Just saw pictures of one of the granddaughters being schooled in the use of a security-config’d 870 shotgun. In one of those pictures, it appears she has just fired the weapon and is absorbing recoil. But it could also appear that she is just getting ready to shoot and is leaning too far back on her rear foot, AWAY from the coming recoil. By the way, she is 22 and solidly built.

I just had to laugh. If it is

You Built WHAT with a Sheet of Plywood?

JJ Johnson over at Reality Survival has such a cool idea for a shooting bench that I just had to share it. You have to see this thing! Check out the article, read it, but look at this video. I’m pilfering it for my site here because it’s just so cool. Basically, with a jig saw, you can convert one regular sheet of 3/4″ plywood into a shooting bench that can be assembled, WITHOUT TOOLS, as either a right-handed of

Some Civil Defense Films for You

Just outside of ground zero, nuclear weapons kill with blast, heat and radiation. The results are destruction, fire or incineration and fatal illness. Go a bit further out, the effects dilute, and one’s primary concern is the blast wave. The blast wave can be understood as the pressure from the explosion moving outward, losing intensity and velocity as it expands. As far as surviving the initial event is concerned, the old Office of Civil Defense /Civil Defense Administration focused on

Just One Story Highlighting Gun Safety

Forget for a moment that these fools were drinking before the accident that killed a man. Forget that planning to do something as immature as firing into the air is a bad idea. Remember two things from this incident:

ALL GUNS ARE LOADED AT ALL TIMES

DON’T EVER POINT ONE AT SOMETHING UNLESS YOU PLAN TO DESTROY IT

Yes, I was yelling, there. In my best parade ground voice. (But don’t call me “Gunny”) These

EMP Methods and Preps - Part III

EMP Methods and Preps – Part I

EMP Methods and Preps – Part II

In the first two parts of this series, I laid out why I believe the threat of an EMP attack on the United States is both possible, and feasible. The returns to the attacker far outweigh his investment in time, technology and the sacrifices among his personnel. I described how certain advances in technology and materials allow attackers to

Marksmanship Training Video - WWII

The Appleseed Project seeks to educate everyday Americans in the art of marksmanship – the goal being to produce “riflemen” in the classic sense. Methods and tests are based on US Army training and qualification tests. Anyone who has attended an Appleseed course will recognize immediately the principles taught in these training videos from WWII. The techniques taught are still valid. There are a good two hours of instruction here. The quality of the video isn’t top notch, but it

Book Review -Prepping for a Suburban or Rural Community: Building a Civil Defense Plan for a Long-Term Catastrophe

Met a guy on Twitter. I had posted a tweet somewhere along the lines of “Civil Defense begins with YOU”. His response was to invite me to read his new book.

Yeah. Sure.

I don’t respond to many invitations, and for good reason. But something about his premise interested me – because it included as part of its foundation an EMP strike. So, I trotted over to Amazon and read what I could of the “Look Inside” feature. The material

A Reply to a YouTube Series of Vids

A reply to a series of videos from a YouTube user by the name of StankMouthCharlie.

Stank Mouth posted a quartet of videos with the title “Why Most Doomsday Preppers Will Die.” They can be found here:

In Charlie’s series, he covers a number of issues relating to the foolishness of prepper stockpiling, training, bugging in or out, marksmanship, manliness, shelters and retreats – all in the face of predatory “gangs” or “posses” with skills and

Another FFL

Hehe, yes, this is a bait-n-switch. This post has nothing to do with Federal Firearms Licenses. In some of my philosophical discussions as pertains to prepping, I take a stand on actually having a life. Starbucks? Sure! Tasty treats, of course! You’re no survivalist if you’re “all prep, no life.” What is survivalism if it leaves out some of the best of living?

I’ve been an on-again, off-again prepper /survivalist since the mid 80s, where my original focus was on
