Will This Faraday Cage Work?

I’m not sure that the open mesh created by screen material will work in defeating the effects of an EMP pulse . I’m a believer in complete sealing and shut out – a metal box with a metal seal. The silencing of the radio is interesting, but that only shows that one range of freqs is attenuated. EMP pulses are expected to produce energy over a wide spectrum. I’m curious, though.

Potential issues that I see are:

  • The radio’s antenna is spec’d to certain wavelengths for best reception, but it can absorb energy over other wavelengths.
  • The screen will block some energy, but not all.
  • Will the unblocked wavelengths have the ability to damage the radio via the antenna?
  • What about the specific vulnerabilities of the other equipment he intends to store in the cage?
  • Would a solid steel storage cabinet, with a metal gasket seal, perform better?

  • Fine copper mesh will work, as you said, for many, perhaps most frequencies. I believe that it will protect anything that a prepper would be likely to have. But when it comes to finding the material, it is actually easier to find copper sheet than it is fine copper mesh. At least that has been my experience.

    So building a cage out of solid copper sheet or steel sheets is probably the easiest and best way to go. And when it comes to grounding, I believe the cage should be grounded externally, and the interior of the cage electrically insulated from the cage with some type of lining.

    Just my opinions.

    EMP can and will be handled by a full screen tight mesh cloth. It must overlap. Anything inside must NOT touch the cloth.

      How tight a mesh are we talking about? Is this mesh one that passes very little light through the weaves, or something just a bit tighter than small screen?

    RF Engineer’s POV:

    Don’t consider copper mesh safe per se…
    The weaves simply ‘lay’s over’ and corrosion or bends
    can cause bad contacts that talk. Hardware cloth or other
    ‘welded mesh’ is preferred. ‘expanded mesh’ types and foil
    OK too. grid corner contacts must be good.

    A mesh that is about 1/20th wavelength and some insulator
    to space the object from the mesh should do fine.

      I was just re-reading this comment. This is actually good advice. The woven nature of the mesh really is a “laying” of many threads. It doesn’t promise anything like what unified construction does. Excellent point.

      Myself, I’m a fan of solid metal boxes with single-piece compression gaskets. 🙂
