Stocking Items for your BOV

You stock items for yourself, your family and pets. Food, water, medical, clothing, shelter, etc… What about your bug out vehicle?

I follow a simple philosophy. Stock for routine maintenance program first, and then your favorite scenarios. Here’s a list to help you get started.

Fluids – (check for proper type /application)

  • Engine oil
  • Antifreeze /coolant (in the proper premixed ratio)
  • Transmission fluid
  • Differential oil (if so equipped)
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Wipers

  • Oil filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Radiator and heater hoses
  • Hose clamps
  • Transmission fluid filter
  • Air filter
  • Brake pads and /or shoes
  • Radiator and /or Overflow Tank Caps

Additional Parts for Extended Usage

  • Alternator
  • Starter
  • Water Pump
  • Thermostat and Housing
  • Valve cover, oil pan, trans pan, differential cover gaskets…
  • Fuel pump (s)

Additional Parts for Major Scenarios

  • Engine ECM (electronic control module) – pre flashed
  • Camshaft sensors
  • Sensors specific to diesel – check your make’s forums for critical parts
  • Other sensors as you can afford
  • Vacuum hoses or stock line

There are a myriad of parts within your vehicle. This list could go on, but many of those parts can be scrounged from other (dead) vehicles. Electronics may be subject to destruction from EMP, and need to be stored ahead of time in a Faraday Cage styled box. Parts such as transmissions, axles, u-joints, springs, etc…. can be found on “donor” vehicles. When stocking parts, get those with the lifetime warranty, if possible. You might need to replace one before TEOTWAWKI.

Regarding fluids. Stock enough to do one complete changeover. That’s a complete oil change, brake system flush, transmission service, etc…. Some people keep enough to top off. That won’t do if you need to do a proper service. The time to lose the use of your vehicle is not when you need it most.
